Public Exposure

Just a quick note on places to find my work these days:

8'x10' building banner for Art of the Wild exhibit

I produced exhibit signage for Art of the Wild, currently on display at the Bell Museum of Natural History through January 4th, 2009. Signage included a 30″x40″ poster, an 8′x10′ building banner (in photo), and a 5″x7″ postcard. And it all turned out to be ever so pretty! The building banner looks especially beautiful with the fall foliage that covers the museum.

I was recently notified that a photo I took of the Newsroom on Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis was listed on Schmap.com’s fifth edition for Minneapolis. Check it out (in action) here!

Inspiration / Disappointment with Felting

I need a new design here. I started making one, then decided it was ugly and that I could do better. One of these weekends I need to seclude myself in a coffee shop and just figure it out.

I also kind of want a better blog purpose. I have been inspired while reading Smitten Kitchen and Julie & Julia and I Love Typography and CSS Tricks and my brother’s experiences about living in Taiwan. Perhaps I just need to be better about writing more often. I need to be less shy about sharing my life and the things I enjoy doing.

Well, here’s one:

Booga Bag, pre-felting

This past weekend I finally felted a Booga Bag I knit about 4 years ago. It’s been in the closet for quite some time, just waiting for its turn. I’m finally determined to finish up current projects so I can move on to new ones.

Booga Bag, post-felting

I brought it over to Karyn’s house since she has felted many things. Under her supervision, I pulled it out of the washer a few times to check the felting process. Before it was finished, I noticed some very disappointing holes (two in the bottom, one in the side). I’m not sure if it was bad knitting (it was one of my first projects) or if moths got to it—I didn’t notice prior to felting. In any case, it’s dry now. I think I want to get some cute fabric to insert a liner so I don’t have to worry so much about the holes.

Client Promotion: Final Draft

Natalie, Andy and I submitted a rough draft (March 13th version) to Theresa Nelson for her comments and mid-project critique. Today, we addressed all of her concerns and created our final draft.

Here is a photo of Natalie and Andy happily preparing our mat boards for mounting the final design:

On Thursday, the three projects that the class created will be formally presented to Theresa for further critique and possible use by the Midtown Greenway Coalition.

Client Promotion: Midtown Greenway Coalition

Natalie Olbrantz, Andy Garcia and I are working together to create a promotional piece for a client, the Midtown Greenway Coalition of Minneapolis, Minnesota. We discussed what sort of piece we wanted to create. Whatever we decided, our piece had to be easily reproducible and maintain elements of the client’s visual identity. Theresa Nelson, the Greenspace and Art Programs Manager, distributed newsletters and referred us to a website (under production) that we could look to for inspiration.

We started by sketching ideas for a brochure with four panels (full size of 8.5″x14″) or a brochure that would fold out as a poster (possible full size of 8.5″x11″).

The four-panel brochure sketch:

The poster brochure sketch:

Ultimately we decided to design the four-panel brochure as we thought it would be easier to work with the information that we received from Theresa.
