August 6th, 2011 — Concerts

I heard grandpa on my transistor radio,
Though he turned in his bones twenty years ago,

And he said, “Kid, there’s something that I’d like to show you,
Get your things, its time for us to go”

So I grabbed my backpack, my flashlight, and a bag of caramel corn,

I got my bicycle, and the radio, and I had it on the road, I said
“I’m ready for what I’m about to see. Yup!”

I headed north to rain that turned to snow
Through rusty towns and dusty gravel roads
And I said, “Grandpa, where is this thing you wanted to show me?”
He said, “Kid, you got a long way to go”

So I went through canyons, caves and catacombs, I sailed on bicycle boats
I slept in chapels and brothels, I met the nicest folks
I said, “I’m ready for what I’m about to see. Yup!”

I heard grandpa on my transistor radio
He said, “Kid, its time for me to go,
And I know that there was something that I wanted to show you,

But its time for you to find it on your own.”

Let me tell you about rage when a signal died that day,
There’s nothing out there and I don’t care; Its to take my life away
I’m not ready and I don’t want to see. Nope!”

Its been years since I heard my transistor radio
Yet I keep going to where it seems I’m meant to go

And I finally realized what he wanted to show me
Where I’ve been, where I am, its the show

many, many thanks to my good friend, mary, and her boyfriend, jonathan, for scoring jason and me awesome seats to see cloud cult at orchestra hall (7th row, center). neither of us had been there before. we were blown away by our seats, and then blown away again by the sound that caroline smith and cloud cult filled the space with. they made me cry* and they made me boogie. it was a wonderful time! (come back to minneapolis soon, cloud cult!!)

* it’s really not that hard to make me cry, i credit my irish heritage for this “blessing.”
June 20th, 2011 — Rock the Garden, San Francisco 2011, Twin Cities

this year, vani was my date for rock the garden. she is an awesome date, by the way! you are jealous.

it was actually sorta fun to hang out in the rain and drizzle all afternoon. we fortified ourselves with summit beer and fabulous food from the chef shack (bison burger and bacon beer brats, drool).

i borrowed jason’s barenaked ladies poncho for the occasion and felt like a pretty terrible girlfriend when the neckline ripped pretty early on. does anyone know where i can buy a replacement? or maybe i can get him something awesome when we’re in san francisco in four and a half days eeeeeeee!!

i was trying to find vani and myself in the time-lapse video, but there are just too many people and we all look like ants!

social media in the rain is tough. i was typing from under my poncho.

kristi and jared shared our sitting area. somehow they walked right by us, which is amazing. seriously, there were so many people.

that’s neko case. she sounded positively delightful. also, the zoom on my camera sorta sucks. i think it’s almost time for a new point and shoot… any recommendations?

okay, so i also enjoyed the heck out of a gyro. it seemed like everyone around me was enjoying them, so i had to have my own later in the evening.

my cute date and me.

my charming landlords.

in this photo, kristi is waiting for jared to return from the barrio food truck with “like, a million tacos.” (he came back with one of each!)

i’m always makin’ friends with nature. as long as the nature isn’t in my house, you know?

barry and stacia joined our excellent spot for a better view of my morning jacket.

that’s mark wheat in the fuzzy distance.

this guy started a beach ball that bounced around to the front of the audience during the first few songs of my morning jackets’ setlist. way to go, beach ball guy! he was really proud of himself.

oh, we also ate the hell out of some fries.

i danced. everything was so wet and muddy! it was pretty fun.

see that beach ball?! yeah.

meanwhile, sunset.

i love you, rock the garden! see you next year!
April 20th, 2011 — Twin Cities, Voltage: Fashion Amplified
i was very excited to attend voltage at first avenue again. my friends in phantom tails played this year!

i went with my friend, vani, and we arrived a bit fashionably late (does that joke work here?). we wandered the venue in search of a good view, which was very hard to come by. we are short and the place was packed. eventually we found an okay spot behind the a/v board upstairs, which is also behind a glass wall. i snapped a few photos, but there was always someone or something to get in my way. also, from where we stood, we couldn’t really see any clothes.
which is sort of a bummer, since that’s what the evening was all about.

that is sort of what the whole night looked like for us. oh, well! at least we could sort of see and it was actually a bit quieter back there. we also entertained ourselves on twitter. (yes, tweeting at or about each other when we were standing right next to each other…)

eventually i learned to hold my camera high above my head and hope for the best!

fort wilson riot is quite enjoyable. i couldn’t really hear them at all, however.

me and my arrow is a large band, full of people.
i wish i had some more interesting commentary for you, but honestly, i’m just trying to get these photos shared. yay, blogging! i am not so great at it.

i missed taking photos of communist daughter because i was running around first avenue (more on that in a moment), but pink mink was punk rock in a way that made me wanna be punk rock.

so back to entertaining ourselves with twitter and running around first avenue — vani and i both won lipstick from the elixery, which was the official (vegan) lipstick of voltage!

vani chose “aviatrix” and i chose “smitten.” mine is a very nice, light shade — not too heavy or dark, but still provides a little va-va-voom! for, you know, those times when a girl needs a little va-va-voom!

apologies for choosing the blurry photo to show it off, but i liked my expression the best in this photo (of the 30 photos i took of myself). but many thanks to elixery for the tweet-n-win opportunity! i had a lot of fun digging through all of the shades and picking out my own to keep!
while i was downstairs, i also ran into orion (lead of phantom tails and looooongtime friend) (so long, that when he introduced me to his gal, he mentioned that we’ve been friends since the 7th grade) (holy geez, where does the time go?) (my hipster cred for someday when he’s famous: i totally have his first album). i told him they rocked the stage and i loved seeing them play first ave! i’m so proud. later i purchased a phantom tails t-shirt, too. omg groupie alert!
when i got home, i felt pretty fabulous. a night out on the town + winning awesome lipstick + hugs from the band? so fantastic!
and vani and i have already discussed getting to the show much earlier next time around.
February 3rd, 2011 — Concerts, Twin Cities

a couple saturdays ago, jason and i went out for a fancy date night. i wore my pearl necklace and a skirt, that’s just how fancy it was.

we went to see his friend, steve clarke, play jazz at a french pastry shop in eagan — pardon my french. i don’t usually get down to that area very often, but it was worth the trip. at one point, both jason and i had our dslr cameras out and we were taking photos of our food. a waiter paused at our table, “oh, is this your first time eating french food?” “no, we’re just nerds,” i replied. he explained how excited he was about the food as it was his first day of work in the restaurant.

we ate cheese, and for my dinner i ordered a couple quiches and a french onion soup. i thought it was all pretty delicious! i also thought that i need to learn how to whip up a quiche.

i’m sort of interested in that whole “domestic goddess” thing. i want to try it.

steve was really excellent. he played slow, romantic songs and fast, funny songs. (one was about a bag of potato chips…)

when jason introduced us, steve was quite the gentleman and kissed my hand. is anything better than french pastries and dapper men?

and then the passion cake arrived. oh, did it ever. YUM.

my handsome, artsy boyfriend ordered creme brulee, which was also YUM.

it was a really splendid night. my man sure knows how to plan a good date!
August 28th, 2010 — Concerts, Rock the Garden, Twin Cities
I went to a beach with a couple other gals, Vani and Jessica, today. It sort of felt like the last weekend of summer and things are winding down. The weather lately has been beautiful and getting ever more Autumn-like. On this note, Jessica asked what the most awesome thing we did all summer was. I gave her about 15 answers; I have had a pretty busy summer.
And during the whole summer I haven’t posted since June. Yeesh. Here’s a goal I’m setting for myself: get all caught up in the next week. Any bets on if I’ll actually get all caught up? Or even close? Here goes…
Let’s start with some music. In mid-June, Jason and I ventured into downtown Minneapolis to see The Hopefuls at Peavey Plaza. It was fun. I like that Minneapolis is dancing more.

Note that these up-close photos were taken by Jason because I was totally into sitting and people watching.

Why are drummers always in the dark in the back? Hard to photograph.

Hey, it’s my ear. I may have an upcoming dental x-ray that involves taking out all of my hardcore earrings and I’m debating whether or not I should just leave them out. I would miss them, I think.

Jason doesn’t like it when I take photos of him taking photos, but I think he’s pretty cute when he’s being a groupie. So I guess I’ll just have to control myself in the future.
We also went to Rock the Garden – sitting on a blanket in the grass at the Walker Art Center with friends: Vani, Matt, Jon and Mark. A pretty superb day! I met Mark Wheat, a DJ for The Current. (Side note: I also recently met Jacquie Fuller, another DJ for The Current, and I was her groupie all night, too. I love local celebrities!)

He really doesn’t look like Billy Idol, which is how I used to picture him when I would listen to him on the radio.

Weird photo. I was in the midst of being lost in the crowd and finding my friends and my blanket all in the same moment.

We’re ready to Rock! the Garden!

Bros.

Roomies.

Distortion? I hope.

OK Go used a lot of confetti in their setlist, which I loved. So whimsical!

Sharon Jones kicked all of our asses with her supreme awesomeness. I want to see her in Minneapolis again.

Some dude’s gramma stitched the MGMT quilt. That is some pretty serious dedication.

I caught some OK Go confetti.

No one in the VIP balcony seemed to be having any fun. Lame.

I guess MGMT was good, but I could’ve ended my evening with Sharon Jones. MGMT had some fun lights which gave me a photo challenge, so cool.

Partying into the night is pretty fun.

Documenting the line up as it’s getting all torn down.

Post-festival snack attack at Nick & Eddie. They had the coolest wallpaper! I want to go again sometime when I’m more hungry.

Souvenir track downloads: such a good idea! ‘Til next year, Rock the Garden…
Okay, what’s next? (P.S. I’m on Twitter and Flickr and Posterous so you can keep up with me on those sites, too. Or maybe you already do? That’s cool.)
