rockin the garden 2011

img167

this year, vani was my date for rock the garden. she is an awesome date, by the way! you are jealous.

@ rock the garden 2011

it was actually sorta fun to hang out in the rain and drizzle all afternoon. we fortified ourselves with summit beer and fabulous food from the chef shack (bison burger and bacon beer brats, drool).

100_1092

i borrowed jason’s barenaked ladies poncho for the occasion and felt like a pretty terrible girlfriend when the neckline ripped pretty early on. does anyone know where i can buy a replacement? or maybe i can get him something awesome when we’re in san francisco in four and a half days eeeeeeee!!

100_1097

i was trying to find vani and myself in the time-lapse video, but there are just too many people and we all look like ants!

100_1098

social media in the rain is tough. i was typing from under my poncho.

100_1100

kristi and jared shared our sitting area. somehow they walked right by us, which is amazing. seriously, there were so many people.

100_1107

that’s neko case. she sounded positively delightful. also, the zoom on my camera sorta sucks. i think it’s almost time for a new point and shoot… any recommendations?

okay, so i also enjoyed the heck out of a gyro. it seemed like everyone around me was enjoying them, so i had to have my own later in the evening.

100_1111

my cute date and me.

100_1112

my charming landlords.

100_1113

in this photo, kristi is waiting for jared to return from the barrio food truck with “like, a million tacos.” (he came back with one of each!)

100_1114

i’m always makin’ friends with nature. as long as the nature isn’t in my house, you know?

100_1116

barry and stacia joined our excellent spot for a better view of my morning jacket.

100_1123

100_1126

that’s mark wheat in the fuzzy distance.

100_1128

100_1130

this guy started a beach ball that bounced around to the front of the audience during the first few songs of my morning jackets’ setlist. way to go, beach ball guy! he was really proud of himself.

100_1131

oh, we also ate the hell out of some fries.

100_1135

i danced. everything was so wet and muddy! it was pretty fun.

100_1138

see that beach ball?! yeah.

meanwhile, sunset.

i love you, rock the garden! see you next year!

cashing in on valentine’s day

the word of the day was…

IMG_3884_1

this past valentine’s day, my sweet boyfriend snuck into my house and left a big bouquet of flowers along with a couple groupons that i would like — one was for a visit to chateau st. croix winery & vineyard, which included a tour, a cheese plate, wine tastings, and two souvenir glasses to take home. the winery was across the river in wisconsin, so we decided to make a whole, fun day trip out of it.

IMG_3887

we paused in st. croix falls at a scenic overlook since we were a little ahead of “schedule.”

IMG_3891

IMG_3892

i think this photo is hilarious because it was my idea to look DIRECTLY INTO THE SUN so of course i’m making a stupid face and ruining an otherwise pretty darn cute photo.

IMG_3893

IMG_3894

IMG_3897

i’m now not sure if those (off to the left of the photo) are taylor’s falls or st. croix’s falls.

IMG_3898

IMG_3900

king of the world! … or at least of this rock.

IMG_3901

IMG_3902

look at all that lichen.

IMG_3903

zooooom!

IMG_3906

jason risked his life for this photo. i almost had to leave him behind. (but he had the keys to the car…)

IMG_3908

IMG_3912

IMG_3914

james knox polk: thank you for making wisconsin and for providing a name for a great street to live on (twice).

IMG_3916

chateau. lions everywhere. i loved it.

IMG_3917

now entering narnia!

IMG_3918

IMG_3919

IMG_3920

our first tastings: 2006 atelier alexander valley zinfandel (the zin) and jaune d’or port (“like drinking a sugar cookie”). both very delicious. i liked most of what we tasted, and i went home with a bottle of the 2009 wild river rose.

IMG_3923

IMG_3924

IMG_3925

oh, now we’re on the tour.

IMG_3930

IMG_3931

IMG_3935

it would be fun to volunteer on bottling day/weekend in september. who wants to join me?

IMG_3936

jason got on the floor for this photo, reviewed it, then proclaimed he was a genius. yes, you are, sweetie.

IMG_3937

the cheese plate for two. you mean i have to share this?!

IMG_3938

jason was even gonna eat the whole plate, too!

IMG_3942

IMG_3943

IMG_3945

super cute bottle. i would’ve bought a bottle if i had a “wine fund” set aside.

IMG_3946

IMG_3947

knights like us, baby we were born to runnn… to the winery… to drink wine…

IMG_3948

this photo was an “accident” but it’s evidence of the face that i make at jason most of the time. it’s my i’m-falling-more-in-love-with-you-right-now face.

IMG_3950

IMG_3951

dead wine barrel converted into a charcoal grill = totally awesome! can also be used as a smoker.

IMG_3953

it was a special festival weekend at the winery, showcasing some of the local artisans and businesses. the sun came out just for us to wander around the booths and take it all in.

IMG_3954

IMG_3955

IMG_3956

at this booth i informed jason of my plan to some day have my own sheep and my own wool-spinning machine. heck yes, i’m gonna make my own yarn. maybe i’ll get a llama, too (that is the yarn used for the hats in the foreground).

IMG_3957

i liked the chardonnay and roasted garlic marinade.

IMG_3958

IMG_3959

IMG_3962

meow!

IMG_3964

i wanted to steal this puppy.

IMG_3968

IMG_3973

this is his (her?) “good side.”

IMG_3974

see? more lions!

IMG_3976

hello, wisconsin.

IMG_4000

sign says: “open wine”
i say: “okay, i will!”

IMG_4002

then we stopped at this goofy little sculpture park on our way to stillwater.

IMG_4006

IMG_4009

this is the work area. there was some art in production as we walked around.

IMG_4016

jason told me i live here. it doesn’t even have a floor. :(

IMG_4017

IMG_4023

IMG_4026

IMG_4028

there wasn’t any gold leaf left for us.

IMG_4032

IMG_4033

IMG_4036

IMG_4039

hey, then we got to stillwater! the river here was really high — the muddy area is where it had been in the last couple weeks.

strawberry/banana malts at leo’s.

IMG_4045

obligatory photos of the stillwater lift bridge.

IMG_4050

see the water? those steps are supposedly leading down to a lower pedestrian pathway. i will have to imagine…

this photo is mostly to show the streetlamp in the water.

IMG_4064

IMG_4066

this is the one place on gowalla that i didn’t check in. dang!

IMG_4071

all in all, it was a pretty perfect day with my sweetheart — good weather, good scenery, good wine…

thanks so much for the gift, jason. i love you.

this bleeding heart

IMG_3638

i could tell you that this is my favorite flower, but i’m not sure it’s the truth. i proclaim every flower i see to be my favorite. so i’ll just tell you this is one of my favorites, for sure. and it’s growing on my front steps!

IMG_3639

these are survivors i picked out of the mess that was my flower garden attempt last summer. i decided i didn’t have enough time or energy to devote to another flower garden project, so i was sort of cleaning up the area and discovered these guys, growing strong during a chilly minnesotan spring.

bleeding heart, periwinkle, lamb’s ear, and day lillies.

@ home

IMG_3646

wikipedia just told me that periwinkle is also a kind of sea snail. the more you know!

Photo 206

this is me tonight: i drank a nordeast grain belt and watched the season finale of glee online. i laid on the floor. the kitties wrestled around me. didn’t turn the television on at all. it’s just quiet, except for the tick of the clock and the gurgle of the kitties’ water fountain.

in one month, i’m going to san francisco again! i’m bringing my special dude and we’re going to hang out in golden gate park, i want to see that japanese tea garden. oh! and this time i will make sure to see the full house house from alamo square. i’m also be attending voices that matter: web design. i’m excited! this lady needs an airplane ride.

Nordeast-a-Whirl

kristi and i went for a walk around our neighborhood yesterday. the smell of lilacs is stuck in my nose.

i’ve decided i really like purple flowers.

100_1025

100_1026

this weekend was art-a-whirl in northeast minneapolis. kristi and i visited “johnstock” on johnson street ne and 29th avenue. we even toured the old hollywood theater – that was awesome!

100_1027

100_1028

this is the main entrance. i don’t think any of it is renovated yet, but there will still be a show hosted there soon. “waiting for godot” by theatre pro rata debuts in july.

100_1029

100_1032

it’s a huge, amazing space. very impressive. i admit i was also looking for orbs. (i haven’t watched enough ghost hunters lately, i suppose.)

i would’ve really liked to see what was at the bottom of these stairs, but they were closed to the public.

100_1040

100_1042

then we crossed the street to see a bunch of crafty booths and live music.

100_1043

pretty low key, but the sun had only recently come out of hiding after a very rainy morning.

100_1044

100_1045

stopped at the coffee shop ne for a cherry french soda. felt like a kid again.

100_1046

100_1047

this is a medium, guys. YUM.

100_1048

sorry about your typo. i’m sure your clothes and bags will be cute regardless.

100_1049

free wine? of course i’ll come visit!

100_1050

audubon park is much prettier than this photo.

100_1055

100_1056

we felt very awkward in this studio because we felt like we were wandering into someone’s house (humans win!) but at least picked up a great compilation of local music. chris koza, caroline smith & the goodnight sleeps, halloween, alaska and many others.

100_1058

cute backyard, too.

100_1060

100_1062

weird and i want one!

100_1064

as we headed home, we saw the nordeast turkeys. kristi decided this was a bit of good luck. i’ll take it!

100_1067

we also took a break in the park, sitting among the dandelions and soaking up some vitamin d.

Voltage 2011 rockin’ it

i was very excited to attend voltage at first avenue again. my friends in phantom tails played this year!

Rock on #Voltage2011!

IMG_3508

i went with my friend, vani, and we arrived a bit fashionably late (does that joke work here?). we wandered the venue in search of a good view, which was very hard to come by. we are short and the place was packed. eventually we found an okay spot behind the a/v board upstairs, which is also behind a glass wall. i snapped a few photos, but there was always someone or something to get in my way. also, from where we stood, we couldn’t really see any clothes.

which is sort of a bummer, since that’s what the evening was all about.

IMG_3514

that is sort of what the whole night looked like for us. oh, well! at least we could sort of see and it was actually a bit quieter back there. we also entertained ourselves on twitter. (yes, tweeting at or about each other when we were standing right next to each other…)

IMG_3515

IMG_3521

IMG_3527

eventually i learned to hold my camera high above my head and hope for the best!

IMG_3534

fort wilson riot is quite enjoyable. i couldn’t really hear them at all, however.

IMG_3539

IMG_3548

IMG_3550

IMG_3562

me and my arrow is a large band, full of people.

i wish i had some more interesting commentary for you, but honestly, i’m just trying to get these photos shared. yay, blogging! i am not so great at it.

IMG_3571

IMG_3579

IMG_3581

i missed taking photos of communist daughter because i was running around first avenue (more on that in a moment), but pink mink was punk rock in a way that made me wanna be punk rock.

IMG_3588

IMG_3591

so back to entertaining ourselves with twitter and running around first avenue — vani and i both won lipstick from the elixery, which was the official (vegan) lipstick of voltage!

IMG_3596

IMG_3600

vani chose “aviatrix” and i chose “smitten.” mine is a very nice, light shade — not too heavy or dark, but still provides a little va-va-voom! for, you know, those times when a girl needs a little va-va-voom!

IMG_3605

IMG_3615

apologies for choosing the blurry photo to show it off, but i liked my expression the best in this photo (of the 30 photos i took of myself). but many thanks to elixery for the tweet-n-win opportunity! i had a lot of fun digging through all of the shades and picking out my own to keep! :)

while i was downstairs, i also ran into orion (lead of phantom tails and looooongtime friend) (so long, that when he introduced me to his gal, he mentioned that we’ve been friends since the 7th grade) (holy geez, where does the time go?) (my hipster cred for someday when he’s famous: i totally have his first album). i told him they rocked the stage and i loved seeing them play first ave! i’m so proud. later i purchased a phantom tails t-shirt, too. omg groupie alert!

when i got home, i felt pretty fabulous. a night out on the town + winning awesome lipstick + hugs from the band? so fantastic!

and vani and i have already discussed getting to the show much earlier next time around.
