Shortly after Jason and I got engaged, we found ourselves celebrating in Stillwater. We took a cave tour and tasted cheeses, then wandered around the main drag, checking out the antique stores. There is also a very lovely yarn store — and I was sort of surprised when he let me drag him in for a little browsing. I started feeling all of the Madelinetosh and a lightbulb went off: what were the primary colors in his family’s tartan and could I splurge on some yarn to make myself a wedding shawl?
Because when else can you justify paying too much for anything?
Our original ideas for our wedding took place in the winter, which is why I picked out heavier-weight yarns. As the planning progressed, our wedding moved up to the end of August. It’s not exactly the best time of year in Minnesota to wear a heavier shawl, but it worked quite nicely for our morning ceremony — and there have been evenings since that I’ve needed to wrap up in it for a little extra warmth.
The pattern idea came from my yarn store coworker, Beth. Weaving the yarn up the “gutters” created by the dropped stitch in each row helped make it look more like a plaid, without becoming overly complicated.
It is a beautiful reminder of our wedding day and how we decided to represent our personalities throughout the celebration. Plus, it’s super soft and warm. I’ll definitely be enjoying this wrap for many years to come.
